Chapter Nineteen

Morning would be coming in a few hours, but for now, the sun wasn’t up. That meant Dan and Steve were still free from their pedestals and flying around campus, keeping an eye on things. These nightly outings had taken on more meaning for them when the championships started, and students were leaving the grounds in droves.

So many people were gone from the campus that it felt less secure and protected. They both believed there should be more security, ensuring the buildings and grounds were protected and guarded, even when there weren’t as many students there.

“I don’t understand why Elmhurst doesn’t make sure there are guards in place during the night,” Steve worried as they glided together over the library in a low loop. “So many students and teachers have left the grounds, it feels like it’s leaving the academy wide open for anyone to come.”

“There should definitely be more security,” Dan said, swinging his head back and forth so he could scan as much of the surrounding area as possible as they flew. “I know it’s Saturday night, but that doesn’t matter. She should understand that is what’s making the school vulnerable. While everyone is off enjoying the games in Scotland, the school is sitting here unprotected, and anything could happen.”

“You’re right. What if someone came in and stole from the library?” Steve asked. “There are some priceless books and artifacts in there. Someone could take something that couldn’t ever be replaced. Or that has information in it no one wants in the wrong hands.”

“Well, what if someone went into one of the school buildings, and broke all the equipment in the classrooms? Then when the students came back for class, they wouldn’t have any way to do their lessons,” Dan said.

“Without anybody around to watch the buildings and keep them secure, someone could sneak in and plant a bomb that blows up the whole building,” Steve offered. “It could destroy part of the campus.”

“What if they set a booby trap specifically for Mia and no one noticed, and she got hurt? Or snatched?” Dan asked.

They were building on each other, escalating to increasingly bigger and bigger problems the more they talked about what could possibly happen. Which made them more and more worried and anxious because they couldn’t do much other than patrol the area and watch for anything happening. They both wished they could do more, and their conversation drifted back, as it often did, to their inability to leave their posts during the day. It would have been more beneficial if they could go out and provide additional surveillance when the students were more likely to be on campus.

Because of the time difference with Scotland, the students drifted on- and off-campus at all times. The rules mandated they were there for their classes during the week, but then they could go to the games in the evenings. When the weekends came, they could spend more time there. It made the gargoyles more nervous when it was a day without a senior high championship game.
